She would smile(that is what we called it) if you brushed her hair, played with her hands, or patted her back. But God used her as an instrument of his love. And brought me to my knees. For that i am forever thankful. Abigail lived for 3 years. She would be 25 now. This verse is very dear to my heart. Isaiah 35:5/6. And the eyes of the blind shall be opened and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing. Some day I shall hear her say "I love you grandma". There have been times of struggle and pain, but I have always thought, "It could have been worse." Pardon me for choosin...Thank you for your response. Pardon me for choosing to wait to post your response until I had time to formulate my reply. Let me also say up front that though I believe the teaching of annihilationism is an error, I do not believe it is an error of the sort that would be necessarily damnable for the one holding it.

I do have a real concern for how annihilationism reflects on the person and work of Christ. Specific doctrines or teachings do not stand alone, but are organically connected within the totality of one’s theology, and how one area of that theology is viewed ripples through the whole.

I do affirm a 1 to 1 between the punishment and the atonement. “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?”

The difference in “type’, if that’s the word you want to use, is between the one doing the atonement and the one being atoned for; the difference between guilty sinners unable to in and of themselves do anything of their own to make up for their sins, and the sinless Son of God, fully man and fully God, offered in our place as the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the kosmos; that sacrifice that though sufficient for all, is effective for the elect.

You said, “…- did our Savior go to hell and suffer eternal conscious torment on your behalf? If so, why then is he raised out of death? He should still be there completing the atonement - for eternity, in fact.”

With all due respect, that statement does not do justice to who Jesus Christ is. God the Father accepted the work He did on the cross. Anything I or you could or would try to do would fall far short, and would never begin to make up for our sins, and I would stand before God in judgment guilty.

You and others may not see this as a “stake in the heart of annihilationism”. I do.
Regards,

~ The Billy Goat ~Billhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17131362642135303406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099051.post-85971531151381559062014-10-16T21:08:14.523-04:002014-10-16T21:08:14.523-04:00Sir, are you a universalist?
I hear it as though ...Sir, are you a universalist?

I hear it as though you say: that if Jesus was not annihilated, then our atonement is not of the same order as our punishment (if the punishment is annihilation).

To that I must ask - did our Savior go to hell and suffer eternal conscious torment on your behalf? If so, why then is he raised out of death? He should still be there completing the atonement - for eternity, in fact.

That is, if you believe that there must be a 1:1 between the type of atonement, and the type of punishment due to the sinner.

Of course, the 1:1 might work if you are a universalist. Jesus was plunged into suffering and death but then raised out of it - so likewise will be all people punished by God?

I do not mean to be disrespectful Bill, but the logic is far from a 'stake to the heart'.

Yours,

casual reader of Rethinking Hell.Rethinking Sydneynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099051.post-20988073494081144872013-10-31T00:24:08.655-04:002013-10-31T00:24:08.655-04:00Bill,

I figured that if I ever came upon $1M, I could put it into a simple passbook account at a major bank at 5%, a return of $50k/yr. I could have lived on that.

But, I made 7.5% at my credit union, so I would keep the additional 2.5% in my account to make it grow.

Another change in our thinking: back then a millionaire was somebody who had a million dollars. Now, it's somebody who makes a million dollars a year. The difference is that our thinking has changed from cash to cash flow. The first athletes to make $1M/yr really weren't "millionaires" in the classical sense of the word because living expenses ate up a chunk, and there wasn't a million left over in cash.Steve Scotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10297044571819912511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099051.post-46521580925629301372013-01-13T12:01:26.752-05:002013-01-13T12:01:26.752-05:00Bill, what a great memory of your parents. My intent in ...Larry,

Thank you for commenting.

My intent in posting the quote from Jack London's novel "Sea Wolf" was as an illustration of what the logical end of secular materialism is. Wolf Larson epitomized secular materialism in his life and philosophy. The novel itself sets Wolf Larson's amoral materialism in contrast to Humphrey Van Weyden's moralistic materialism.

My concern was more philosphicaly broad then the more narrow scope of the theology of Christian hedonism... I have not spent a lot of time on that as a theological issue and will have to leave it to others who have more closely examined it to respond on how or how not this quote from London relates to that issue.Billhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17131362642135303406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099051.post-58740769583257684602011-11-21T15:14:00.724-05:002011-11-21T15:14:00.724-05:00This excerpt is enough, in itself, to refute so-ca...This excerpt is enough, in itself, to refute so-called "Christian Hedonism." Christian Hedonism is a devotion to the greatest pleasure no matter what, and -- at the present moment, which the Christian Hedonist must concur, is all that the estimate of the greatest pleasure can cover -- the greatest pleasure happens to be God. In fact, the "leading" Christian hedonist says, that it is "immoral to worship God for any other reason than the pleasure to be had in him." Therefore, if the estimate of the greatest pleasure changes, even mistakenly, the hedonist follows a different means to the end of pleasure.Larryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17548005503765076487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099051.post-51718299659394808342011-10-09T01:22:55.309-04:002011-10-09T01:22:55.309-04:00A-Rod whiffs to end the season. The fact that joy is in the cluster of the fruit of the Spirit, yea, even the second mentioned, has huge ramifications.

Recently I have been speaking at a church not in the Reformed tradition. What joy! What happiness! How much they care for one another! This is so very unlike everything that I see in Reformed churches.

This joylessness, though not the primary cause for our departure from RBC many years ago, was nonetheless one of the causes. We did not fit. Our joyfulness was unwelcomed. Our upbeat view of life ran counter to what we encountered in the church.

Throughout the years I have frequently butted heads with joyless Reformed folks over this matter, folks who hold a view of life that is dreary, ever dismal, gray, and joyless.abcanedayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13671418539630398806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6099051.post-28171276097537100902010-01-14T06:54:06.151-05:002010-01-14T06:54:06.151-05:00Nice blog as for me.
